Ilia State University - Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory (Georgia)
Description: Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory is the first mountain observatory in Former Soviet Union with excellent observed conditions and transparent air. Now the observatory is a part of Ilia State University, which is a newly established and one of rapidly developing universities in Caucasus. The IRSES team consists of relatively young, but experienced researchers. The main research area of team members covers the observational/theoretical solar physics and numerical fluid dynamics. The group members have experience in analyses of observational data from ground based (54 cm coronagraph of AAO) and space based (Hinode, SOHO) telescopes. The group members have already established scientific cooperation with European IRSES teams, particularly with IWF/SPG, KUL/CPA and ST AND. The group members cooperate with many other institutions from US, Europe and Asia: McWilliams Centre for Cosmology and Department of Physics, Carnegie Mellon University; Department of Physics, Kansas State University; Nordita, AlbaNova University Centre, Sweden; INAF - Osservatorio Astronomico di Torino, Italy; LUTH, Observatoire de Paris, France. The group will play a major role in observational part of the project with observations from space and ground based instruments. 53 cm solar coronagraph of Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory will provide the consortium with high-quality images of chromospheres lines. Almost two third of team members are the young researchers at the beginning of their carrier. They will greatly benefit from collaboration with European established scientists.
Role of the team in the project: Our team takes major part in observational analyses of precursors of solar flares and CMEs. The team will be involved in observational and analytical studies of the SOW dynamical events and waves and instabilities.
